African Princess

I went to Africa with a group from the Denver Zoo and found this dancer in one of the villages we visited. I was captivated by her regal appearance and aloof attitude. Her head dress is a lions mane and her jewelry is beads and sea shells. I choose a deep green background to show off her painted face and costume. Our timing was fortuitous because the village was preparing for a ceremony and the costumes were fabulous. There were warriors in lion head dresses and red blankets and women singing and dancing in colorful dresses. Serenity, watercolor painting

I found this subject in the charming town of Harrisville New Hampshire while on a painting trip through New England. The painting is the subject of one of my tutorials and I am pointing out the different washes and how they work in the painting. If you go to my website you can check out the tutorials. To add to the feeling of serenity, I decided not to include the trees on the distant bank and only painted their reflections in the water. The band of red on the boat was exciting to paint because it is the complement of all those greens in the reflections.
