Sunflowers, watercolor painting

January 22, 2016

How can anyone paint sunflowers without thinking of those beautiful vibrant paintings by Vincent Van Gogh?  I decided to show the large sunflowers in three different stages to represent different stages of life. Symbolism is an interesting addition to painting and one that Van Gogh used quite often. These large sunflowers indicate that Summer is coming to an end and Fall is right around the corner. This painting is full of rich darks which put great emphasis on the sunflowers and make the composition more dramatic. Rich darks is one of my watercolor tutorial videos so check it out. These large sunflowers are a favorite subject of mine and I look forward to painting them every year.
