Venice Facade Watercolor Painting

October 9, 2015

This building in Venice is typical of the architecture on the grand canal in that beautiful city.  The byzantine influence is obvious in the windows and doorway and the flower boxes add nice shots of color.  The juxtaposition of the motorboat with the traditional old gondolas interested me and the decaying facade was a nice backdrop for the boats.  In Venice people only move by foot or by boat and I love not having to deal with cars, buses, and motor scooters.  I used the white watercolor paper for the whites in this painting and that worked because of the nice shadow shapes.  Painting in watercolor is like a chess game where you always have to be thinking several moves ahead.
