Winter In Downtown Denver

I love painting snow scenes, probably because I lived in Steamboat Springs for ten years before moving to Denver. Also, snow simplifies the landscape by covering up a lot of details. I painted this after a wet snow that fortunately stuck to everything. There was no way I could set up on the train tracks so I worked from photo’s back in my studio. I live within walking distance of downtown and more and more I find the city to be one of my favorite subjects. Denver has preserved a lot of it’s old historical buildings and the way they fit in with the newer architecture is of great interest to me. Plus, the old street lamps with their intricate design are found all over downtown and they were fun to include in this composition. When I paint a cityscape, I look for iconic things like the older buildings and the street lamps which are characteristic of the city.
