Fall 2017 (PAST - signup for my newsletter for updates on future watercolor classes)
Held at The Art Students League of Denver
200 Grant St, Denver, CO 80203
Instructor Dennis R. Pendleton / Ability: beginner

If you want to get started in watercolor and learn the fundamentals like setting up your palette, color mixing, values, shapes, and edges then this is the class for you.  Within a few weeks you will be painting objects, still lifes and other subjects and by the end of the workshop you will be ready to continue painting and enter other watercolor classes if you choose to do so.  This workshop will give you the fundamentals and good habits to move forward.  I have been painting in watercolor for 40 years and I can assure you that this workshop will save you lots of time and frustration.  Watercolor is an illusive medium and proper instruction is incredibly valuable, especially in the beginning.

Join me in Steamboat Springs Colorado each August to capture the unique beauty of the Yampa and Elk River Valleys in this watercolor Landscape Workshop.  Working ranches with horses and cattle, old barns and haystacks, and emerald fields against the blue indigo mountains provides the ultimate setting for the watercolor artist.  Dennis will demonstrate lessons on painting aspen trees, rivers and streams, haystacks, old barns, and the historical train depot.  Plan on returning home with a portfolio of memories and photo reference material.  Basic watercolor experience needed. Students are responsible for their lodging and meals. Dottie at the Steamboat Art Museum can make recommendations on lodging.

As we are in summer and the season of gardening, dig out your easel and paints to join Dennis Pendleton at the Botanic Gardens.  Flowers, foliage, and water offer the artist a rainbow of colors and diversity of forms.  And this year the magnificent sculptures of Alexander Calder will be on display in the gardens.  Monet, the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, once said, “I perhaps owe it to flowers that I became a painter.”  The garden gave him freedom to break new ground and explore.  Just like Monet, you will be enchanted by the gardens as you learn from Dennis how to compose, identify values, and mix colors.  Each day there will be a demonstration, personal instruction, and critiques.  Your paintings will blossom as you investigate flowers, trees, water, sunlight, and the sculptures.  Come see the garden with fresh eyes! Dennis will demonstrate each day and then give personal attention to the students.

Taos Watercolor Workshop

Every spring I teach a Watercolor Workshop in Taos New Mexico. Traditionally the dates are the week before the Memorial Day Weekend.  We headquarter at the fabulous and traditional Mabel Dodge Luhan House which is famous for its traditional adobe architecture and delicious gourmet buffet breakfast.  It is the perfect beginning of each day as we all gather in the Mabel Dodge dining room for breakfast before we take off for a day of painting.  In the halcyon days of Taos New Mexico, Mabel Dodge hosted artists, authors and other free spirits such as Georgia O’Keefe and Ansel Adams and considered it her mission to make Taos a national center for the arts.  After breakfast we go out painting and I demonstrate every day then spend time with each student as we discuss and work on their paintings. We have evening critiques and some evenings we meet to discuss art and art history. The different painting locations in Taos are wonderful and the sunlight is legendary.  Some of the locations where we paint are the famous Saint Francis Church, the legendary home and studio of early Taos artist Edgar Couse, the Taos Valley with the mountains in the background, Le Doux Street, and the charming little town of Arroyo  Secco.

This is a fun and  informative workshop and I am always delighted with the paintings that are done that week.  Getting to experience what it is like to be a full-time artist for 5 days is one of the things the participants say they really enjoy.

SOLD OUT: Each student is responsible for their own lodging and meals and the price of the workshop is $450.  A $100 deposit will hold your space and the remaining $350 is due by May 1st. This workshop is limited to 12 people and sold out the last 3 years and last year it actually sold out in January 4 months before the workshop.

This is sold out, but if you are interested in attending the next Taos workshop or have any questions, email Dennis at pendletonstudio@gmail.com
