High Tea Watercolor Painting by Dennis Pendleton

Every afternoon in downtown Denver the Brown Palace Hotel serves high tea and it is a favorite of locals and visitors alike who enjoy whiling away an hour or two with tea and decadent deserts. I have heard that coconut tea and scones are a favorite combination. A master pianist playing a grand piano adds to the ambiance and everyone dresses up for this special occasion. The antique furniture and big cut glass lamps make for interesting subject matter and I was glad the busboy had not cleared the dishes off the table in the foreground. The people were engrossed in conversation and, because I wasn’t using a flash, didn’t seem to notice I was taking pictures. In a case like this, I always check with someone in charge, explain that I am an artist, and get permission before taking photo’s. With this much wonderful subject matter, I find it difficult to settle on what to paint so I remind myself that I can come back again and again and do as many different paintings as I like.
