The Market, Denver

The Market in downtown Denver is one of my favorite places to sketch because it is full of interesting subjects and the food is delicious. I can sit at one of the tables for hours over a cup of their famous hot chocolate and fill my sketchbook. The blue and white striped awnings, round wooden tables and heart shaped metal chairs add to the ambience and the figures liven up the place. I love painting all the clutter of boxes, crates, cans, dishes, and other stuff because they are interesting shapes full of color. This painting was done from several sketches and photo’s that I accumulated one afternoon. The man in his black suit framed by the sunlight coming through the door allowed me to paint the darkest dark against the lightest light which always attracts the viewers eye. Returning to places like this from time to time always gives me new inspiration.
