Washington Park, Denver Watercolor Painting

Denver is famous for its city parks and they are wonderful places for artists to sketch. This is a painting I did for a class in Washington Park. The big tree overlaps the middle ground and background and establishes the fore ground. By painting this tree with lots of detail I was able to suggest the other trees in the background with less detail. I added the couple walking their dog to give scale to the painting and to add a focal point. I have walked and ridden my bike in this park in all seasons in all different kinds of weather and the trees always interest me. It’s sad when one of the older trees like this one has to be cut down because of disease but they are always replaced by several new ones and then the park always has trees in different stages of development.
