Wild Roses Watercolor Painting

A few years ago I started a series of large flower paintings because I new it would be a great challenge and something I could work on along with my other paintings. This one is Wild Roses and it is 40×55 inches. Painting something this large in watercolor meant developing some new techniques which I believe made me a better artist. I was inspired by the paintings of Joseph Raffael and the large waterlily series by Claude Monet. When I painted this I thought of the branches coming out of the large flower like the spokes of a wheel. I can’t look at flowers now without thinking of them as large paintings.
